Tamra's Story

Hi! My name is Tamra, I am 6 years old and I live in California. I like to do arts and crafts and my favorite stuffed animal is my bunny. I also like doing lots of things with my friends. I am in first grade, my Mommy teaches me at home. The name of our school is Sunshine Learning Academy! I have a sister named Briana and she is the same age as me (we have the same birthday). I have a pet hermit crab named Feisty. My Mommy and Daddy found out that I had MHE when I was around 1 year old. The doctor had me get some x-rays but my Mommy and Daddy knew what it was even before the x-rays because my Daddy and other people in his family also have MHE. My sister Briana has it too but hasn’t had any surgeries yet. I will be having my first surgery on March 6, 2001. There are some bones on my ankle that need to be removed because they are making my leg grow wrong and my spine is curving too. I don’t really like that I have MHE and I am scared about having my surgery and I wish I wouldn’t have to have it because it makes me sad. My Mommy and Daddy are really helping me to feel better about it though. I am not as scared as I was at first and I think it’s really neat that I get to pick the color of my cast – PURPLE! I also feel real proud because the bones the doctor is removing are going to be sent to a researcher who will try to make it so that other kids may not have to ever have any surgeries. That would be great!
